The Field Guides Association of Southern Africa was formally established in 1992. It is a non-profit organization representing Field or Nature Guides and trackers throughout Southern Africa, and is a registered Section 21 Company. FGASA has full accreditation with THETA (The Tourism, Hospitality and Sport Education and Training Authority) as a training provider.
FGASA aims to promote a culture of professional guiding based on a strong, ethical, well-informed, safety conscious approach to provide the visitor to the African Bush with a pleasant and memorable experience.
FGASA sets a distinct standard by means of:
- A training syllabus for Nature Guides
- A code of conduct and a set of guiding principles
- The quality management of nature guides, trainers and assessors.
- An evaluation system on the form of theory assessments and practical field evaluations
- Training Provider Endorsement - Nature Guide Training institutions are given recognition for a
high standard of training through endorsement based on THETA / FGASA requirements.
- A valid recognised First Aid Certificate.
