The programme includes a comprehensive suite of recognised FGASA qualifications, including FGASA NQF 2 Nature Guide, FGASA Apprentice Trails Guide, and FGASA Marine & Coastal Guide. These internationally respected qualifications provide an excellent foundation for a career in guiding while opening pathways into a wide range of specialist fields within the ecotourism industry.

Programme Duration and Structure

The Career Development Programme is designed to be flexible while maintaining a clear pathway for continued professional development.

Phase 1 & Phase 2

Together, Phases 1 and 2 are delivered over approximately one academic year, including scheduled term breaks.

During this time, students complete the core FGASA qualifications together with Bhejane’s professional development modules, practical field experience and specialist training.

Phase 3 (Optional)

Students wishing to continue their development may progress directly into Phase 3, which aligns with Year 2 of Bhejane’s Advanced Nature Guiding & Wildlife Conservation Programme.

This allows students to continue building advanced guiding skills, gain additional workplace experience and work towards higher-level guiding competencies without repeating training already completed.

Already Completed FGASA or IFGA Qualifications?

Many students discover Bhejane after they have already begun their guiding journey with another training provider. If you have already completed FGASA (Field Guides Association of Southern Africa) or IFGA (International Field Guides Association) qualifications, you dont have to start again.

We’ll review your existing qualifications and practical experience to determine the most appropriate entry point into the programme. In many cases, students are able to receive recognition for prior learning and continue building their professional skills without repeating training they have already completed.

Admission Requirements

• Minimum age of 18
• Must be fluent in English
• Must be able to swim unaided for 100m (If doing Marine)
• Good level of physical and mental fitness
• Drivers licence not required by highly recommended
• Admission may be subject to an interview.
• If doing Phase 2 and 3 only, you must already be a FGASA member with Paid up membership.

Frequenlty Asked Questions

Can I enrol if I am under 18 years old?

Yes.

Students under the age of 18 are welcome to apply. However, we generally recommend that younger students consider our Advanced Nature Guiding & Wildlife Conservation Programme, as the longer three-year structure provides additional time for personal growth, practical experience and professional development before entering the industry.

Every applicant is different, so if you’re unsure which programme is right for you, we’d be happy to discuss your individual circumstances.

I’ve already completed some FGASA or IFGA qualifications. Do I have to start from the beginning?

Not necessarily.

If you’ve already completed recognised guiding qualifications through another training provider, we’ll assess your previous training and practical experience to determine the most appropriate entry point into the programme.

Many students join Bhejane after completing short courses elsewhere, allowing them to continue building their skills without unnecessarily repeating training.

I’d like to join Phase 2, but I don’t want to complete the Marine Guiding component. Is that possible?

Yes.

The Career Development Programme offers flexibility for students who have different career goals or who have already completed certain specialist components elsewhere.

I studied my FGASA NQF 2 through self-study and only need the practical assessment. Can I join Bhejane?

Yes.

Many students join Bhejane after completing all or part of their theory independently.

We’ll review your current progress and recommend the most suitable starting point to complete your practical training and assessments, while also helping you plan your next steps towards further qualifications and professional development.

Do I have to complete all three phases?

No.

Most students complete Phases 1 and 2 over one academic year, which provides a comprehensive foundation for a professional guiding career.

Students wishing to continue developing their skills can then progress into Phase 3, which aligns with Year 2 of Bhejane’s Advanced Nature Guiding & Wildlife Conservation Programme.

The programme is designed to be flexible, allowing students to continue their professional development at a pace that suits their career goals.

Can I continue into the Advanced Nature Guiding & Wildlife Conservation Programme later?

Absolutely.

The Career Development Programme has been designed as a direct pathway into Bhejane’s flagship three-year programme.

Students who decide to continue can build on the qualifications, practical experience and professional skills already gained, without having to start their training from the beginning.

Which programme should I choose—the Career Development Programme or the Advanced Nature Guiding & Wildlife Conservation Programme?

The best programme depends on your stage of life, previous experience and long-term career goals.

The Career Development Programme is ideal for career changers, older students (average age is 22-28), international students with limited time, and those who have already completed some guiding qualifications elsewhere.

The Advanced Nature Guiding & Wildlife Conservation Programme is our flagship career pathway and is generally the best choice for school leavers (18 – 22) and students looking for the most comprehensive preparation for a long-term career in the safari industry.
