Career Development Insights

Most guides settle for a job, but few prepare for a true nature guiding career. The Bhejane program offers young guides a clear path, combining FGASA qualifications with hands-on career development in guiding. We recently caught up with graduates making waves in the Timbavati, like Rone Reiners and Lauren Proctor, proving this approach works beyond the classroom. Keep reading to see how professional guiding can become your long-term path, not just a temporary stop.

The Difference Between a Job and a Career

What separates a job from a career? A job pays the bills, but a career builds your future. In the nature guiding industry, this distinction matters more than you might think. Many aspiring guides complete basic training, land a position at a lodge, and assume that’s where the story ends. But what happens when you want to grow? What if you dream of leading walking safaris, working at top-tier lodges, or specializing in birding or tracking?

That’s where the Bhejane program comes in. We’re not just about getting you your first guiding position. We’re about setting you up for a lifetime in professional guiding, with the credentials, skills, and mentorship that open doors throughout your career.

Building Foundations with FGASA Qualifications

The Field Guides Association of Southern Africa (FGASA) sets the gold standard for guiding credentials across the region. These aren’t just certificates to hang on your wall. They’re recognized benchmarks that lodges, reserves, and safari companies trust when hiring guides.

The Bhejane Advanced Nature Guiding and Career Development programme offers the full suite of FGASA entry level qualifications. This means you’ll complete your FGASA NQF2 Terrestrial and Marine qualifications, and progress to FGASA Apprentice Trails Guiding, and FGASA NQF 4 Theory. Building a solid foundation in ecology, animal behavior, safety protocols, guest engagement and workplace skills.

But we don’t stop there. For young guides ready to specialize, we also offer several FGASA and Bhejane Specialist qualifications. Whether you want to focuss Marine, Birding, Vehicle Based Guiding, Astronomy, Trails or Butterflies, these specialist paths allow you to stand out in a competitive field and command respect from both employers and guests.

Career Development in Guiding: The Three-Year Approach

Our three-year programme isn’t about rushing through content. It’s about giving you time to absorb knowledge, practice skills in the field, and develop the confidence that separates good guides from great ones. Throughout the course, you’ll gain practical experience in real wilderness settings, learning to read animal behavior, navigate challenging terrain, and handle the unexpected moments that make guiding so special.

This extended timeline also means you’re building relationships with industry professionals, fellow students who’ll become lifelong colleagues, and mentors who genuinely care about your success. These connections matter when you’re looking for your next opportunity or seeking advice on career decisions.

Timbavati Success Stories: Where Theory Meets Reality

Recently, we traveled to the Timbavati to check in with some of our graduates, and their stories perfectly illustrate what’s possible when you invest in proper training and career development in guiding.

Rone Reiners: Rising Through the Ranks

Rone Reiners completed the Bhejane three-year course and has already achieved something many guides dream about. She has been successful in the first phases of the And Beyond selection programme, one of the most prestigious pathways in African safari guiding. Currently, Rone is completing a training block at Ngala, honing her skills with one of the continent’s most respected safari brands.

What got Rone to this point? It wasn’t luck. It was preparation, professional credentials, and the confidence that comes from thorough training. Her FGASA qualifications opened the door, but her comprehensive education through Bhejane gave her the skills to walk through it.

Lauren Proctor: Specializing and Advancing

Lauren Proctor represents another success story unfolding in the Timbavati. When we visited, we were there to complete her FGASA NQF 4 assessment, a significant milestone in any nature guiding career. But Lauren isn’t stopping there. She’s already well along in her path to becoming a FGASA Lead Trails Guide, a specialist qualification that will allow her to lead walking safaris and take on greater responsibility in the field.

Lauren’s progression shows the power of continuing education and specialization. She didn’t settle for her initial qualification. She kept pushing, kept learning, and kept building her professional credentials.
